Collecting time: why provenance now leads the market
12 August 2026
Condition once ruled every catalogue description. Today the story a piece carries — who owned it, where it surfaced, what papers follow it — increasingly sets the pace at the rostrum.
The pattern is visible across categories. A watch with an unbroken ownership chain outperforms an identical example without one. A jewel with its original fitted case and a period invoice draws bidders who never respond to loose stones. Provenance is not nostalgia; it is verification made tangible.
For consignors, the lesson is practical: keep everything. Boxes, receipts, service records, photographs. For buyers, the lesson is patience — the right example with the right history rewards the wait.
